How do I register for the PI Exam Prep Course?
How much does the Private Investigator Exam Prep cost?
What are the requirements to take the exam?
- At least 25 years of age
- Have 3 years of experience as a private investigator or “equivalent position and experience”, which is described in more detail here.
- The principal in a private investigation business entity: this includes overseeing the day-to-day affairs and possessing the expertise in the investigations.
- Get fingerprinted for the Department of Justice Services. (Information on finding a fingerprinting location and scheduling)
*Exam results are valid for up to two years.
Where do I take the NYS Private Investigator License Exams?
The NYS Division of Licensing Services administers the PI License exams at the following locations*:
*These locations are NOT for Guardian Security Training’s PI exam preparation course. Registration for the PI License Exam must be done through the NYS DOLS.

On Franklin Ave.: turn RIGHT onto Hempstead Turnpike and go 5 blocks. Turn LEFT onto Lincoln Rd. (7-Eleven on corner). The VFW Hall and parking lot are on the RIGHT.

When is the next NYS PI License Exam?
New York State administers the NYS Private Investigator License Exam on the following Mondays at 9:30am.* The exam is scheduled for 2 1/2 hours. This list will be updated as the NYS Division of Licensing Services publish their upcoming exam dates:
